DOST 8 - E. Samar Conducts Virtual Training on Processing of Selected Agricultural Commodities

The DOST 8-Eastern Samar Provincial S&T Center in coordination with the DOST-Regional Office No. VIII conducted a Virtual Training on Taro, Sweet Potato and Banana Chips Processing last October 7, 2021 to Agricola Food Products, a startup company based in Taft, Eastern Samar. 

Experts from the Food Processing Division of the DOST-Industrial Development Institute (ITDI) served as the resource speakers for the one-day training. Lectures, actual demo and practical tips on raw materials selection and preparation; sorting/washing/sanitizing; peeling and slicing; blanching; frying; de-oiling and seasoning were comprehensively discussed to Mr. Dante C. Balein, Owner/Manager of Agriloca Food Products and staff.

DOST Leads in the Establishment of Fish Processing Center in Borongan City, Eastern Samar

The DOST - Eastern Samar Provincial S&T Center, in coordination with the City Government of Borongan, will soon establish a village-level fish processing center in Brgy. Cabong of the city. 

In a recently held meeting at the Borongan City Hall, together with the officials of the City Agriculture Office and the City Cooperative Office and with the presence of the project beneficiary, the DOST-Eastern Samar has informed the group that the necessary equipment for fish processing, i.e. pressure cooker/canner, can sealer, stainless steel tables/sinks and chest freezer are on procurement stage and will be delivered in 1-2 months’ time. 

Aside from the acquisition of equipment, the DOST will also provide technical trainings and consultancy services for the whole duration of the project. As counterpart, the City LGU has committed in the purchase of lot and the construction of new processing facility for the Cabong Mandaragat Association, the identified beneficiary of the project, and has started the preparation of documents for the bidding process for the facility, which is targeted to be completed and fully-functional before the year ends.

DOST-Eastern Samar Supports Bamboo Industry in the Province

The DOST-Eastern Samar Provincial S&T Center is actively supporting the government’s efforts in developing the bamboo industry in the province. 

In the latest Bamboo Industry Stakeholders Meeting held last September 16, 2021 at Serenada Event Center, Borongan City, which was attended by several national government agencies, non-government organizations, the business sector, and the academe, DOST-E.Samar reaffirms its commitment to assist the bamboo industry thru actively participating in its meetings and by providing financial and technical assistance thru introduction of new technologies and equipment in bamboo processing to interested individuals and groups which may be funded via the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) or the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program.

DOST-8 conducts Orientation on Securing Fairness Opinion Report to ESSU

The Department of Science and Technology – Regional Office No. 8 (DOST-8) recently held a Consultative Meeting on the Implementation of Fairness Opinion Board (FOB) Project and the Process of Securing Fairness Opinion Report (FOR) with the Intellectual Property and Research and Development officials of the Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), Borongan City, Eastern Samar. The activity, which aims to orient the ESSU on the process of commercializing of its various technologies generated from its Research and Development activities, was held virtually via an online platform last January 22, 2021. 

 The event was led by Engr. Ernesto M. Granada, DOST-8 Regional Director and Head FOB-VIII Secretariat, who also gave a Welcome Message and Overview of the Activity. Engr. Florentino L. QuiƱones, FOB VIII Project Coordinator, discussed the Guidelines on the Constitution of the FOB, the Process in the Issuance of FOR and the contents of the written recommendation by the DOST Secretary. Dir. Kimberly Michelle R. Quintua, Director of the ESSU Intellectual Property Office of the University (IPOU) and Gen. Manager, Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO), presented the different ESSU technologies and R&D outputs ready for commercialization and require FOR issuance.
